Muskie Fishing on Lac Vieux Desert

Lac Vieux Desert is a "Class A" Muskie lake known as one of the better lakes in the area for Walleye, Northern and Pan fish. It is also home of the World Record Tiger Muskie! George Langley, the Eagle River Wisconsin Guide Association president was quoted in ESPN Outdoors as saying, "Lac Vieux Desert is one of, if not the most widely known year-round fishery in northeastern Wisconsin." Ice fishermen are often seen trying their luck at one of the three large, shallow bays on its east side, Rice Bay, Indian Bay, and Thunder Bay.

Lac Vieux Desert in the North Woods of Michigan and Wisconsin

Divided between Gogebic County (Michigan) and Vilas County (Wisconsin), Lac Vieux Desert is the source of the Wisconsin River and is fed primarily by springs in the surrounding swamps. The northeastern lobe of the Lac Vieux Desert contains a number of small islands, including Draper Island in Michigan and Duck Island in Wisconsin. The maximum depth is about 40 feet, surface area is 4,260 acres (approx 6.66 sq. mi.), of which, approximately 2/3 is in Wisconsin and 1/3 in Michigan.

French fur trappers translated Lac Vieux Desert from the Anishinaabe language, Gete-gitigaani-zaaga'igan, meaning "Lake of the Old Clearing" or "Old Garden."
